In 2009 the global volume consumption of personal care ingredients was close to 575,000 tonnes.
So what are these ingredients? What do they do? Are they harmful? Benign? Beneficial?
We put them on our skin every day - whether we are male or female, young or old. And you dont have to follow a 9 step routine to buff, hydrate, plump, tone and enhance to be doing it. Even the most spartan personal hygeine routine is likely to involve soap, toothpaste and deodorant and involve approximately 30 unique ingredients.
The Cosmetic Ingredient Database is a resource to gather information and articles on these ingredients. It is a work in progress, with new entries being continually added and cross references to scientific research. The ingredients database launches with 244 entries. We estimates that it will grow to thousands. We will also soon be adding a visual cross reference to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) rating for each ingredient - a respected guide for the consumer saftey.
