Autumn is in full swing. And you know what that means - it's time to switch up your skincare routine. Think - nourish, protect and soothe. With just a few simple tweaks your skin will be ready for the colder months ahead.
Switch from foaming cleanser to gel/balm/oil/cream
In the summer when you are sweating your face off foaming cleanser might be enough. But in the colder months it is all about nourishing the skin and protecting your moisture barrier. Even if you haven't embraced double cleansing, autumn is when you should switch to gel, balm, oil or cream cleanser. These will thoroughly cleanse your face without drying it out.
Spritz away
During the warmer months, you spritz away because well... sweat. When weather turns colder facial mists can be a great way to give your skin a boost of moisture during the day. Look for mists that will hydrate, nourish and protect and luckily there are plenty of options on the market. Look for ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid, oils, peptides, botanical extracts and antioxidants (to name a few).
Switch your day and night moisturizer
Light, gel-type moisturizers won't cut it during the colder months. Those creams that you just haven't been reaching for because they felt too heavy for summer? It's time to use them again. Yes, even oily and combination skin will benefit from a richer day and night time moisturizer. It might take some trial and error before you find a suitable moisturizer, but your skin will thank you for it.
Keep up with exfoliation
Chemical exfoliation will remove the dead cells from the surface of the skin and stimulate deep cell renewal. It treats anything from acne to hyperpigmentation. It will prep your skin for the rest of the steps in your routine. That said - don't be heavy handed with acids. You know your skin the best. Some people can tolerate using acids twice a day, every day. If that's you, carry on. If your skin is more sensitive, do go slow. Over-exfoliation is a thing. We are all more prone to dehydration during colder months and you don't want to mess up your moisture barrier.
Add an oil to your routine
A great facial treatment oil can be a true skin saviour during the colder months. A couple of drops under your nighttime moisturizer and you will wake up with a glowing complexion. Likewise if you have dry/dehydrated skin a couple of drops under your daytime moisturizer will leave your skin feeling soft, nourished and comfortable.
Don't forget your body
Bodycare is important. Especially when the weather gets colder. Layers of clothing, hot showers and baths - there are less oil glands on the body and skin will get dry. Cell turnover rate is slower too. Don't forget to apply a body lotion after every shower.
