Bisabolol is an ingredient you might have heard of, or even come across on the inci list, but never really paid much attention to. The fact of the matter is, we might not talk about it to the same extent as we do about retinol or Alpha-Hydroxy acids. But it does have plenty of benefits for the skin and is present in many skincare products.
What is Bisabolol?
Bisabolol is a phytochemical compound found in various plants and trees. There are two types - Alpha and Beta Bisabolol. Beta Bisabolol is commonly derived from corn. Alpha Bisabolol is the compound used in skincare products. There is organic and synthetically produced Bisabolol. However, the synthetic version has less active ingredients then its organic counterpart. German Chamomile (also known as Matricaria recutita) is one of the most common sources of Alpha Bisabolol. Another source is the Brazil-native Candeia tree. Because the majority of global production comes from this particular tree, it has led to deforestation (Bisabolol used in Ishtar's products is eco-friendly).
Benefits of Bisabolol for the skin
Bisabolol has plenty of benefits for the skin. Because it is rich in panthenol, it helps hydrate the skin. It reduces dryness and dehydration. This makes it an excellent healing agent. Some studies have shown Bisabolol has anti-microbial properties. Bisabolol is an antioxidant and works by blocking the enzymes responsible for the degradation of collagen, and stimulates collagen production. One study showed it can inhibit melanin synthesis and help treat hyperpigmentation. But the most notable benefit (and why Bisabolol was used for centuries) is its anti-inflammatory properties. It is often used in skincare products for sensitive and otherwise compromised skin. The reason why it is popular with formulators is Bisabolol enhances the penetration of other active ingredients.
